Sonia Singh is a fourth-year undergraduate student studying Sociology at York University, and is concurrently completing a placement position to earn a Cross-Disciplinary Certificate in Public History at York University . Within her placement, she is focusing on a public dialogue with Inuk artist Koomuatuk (Kuzy) Curley for the Art Gate VR exhibition, “Return to Ahqahizu,” which was curated by visual art students from York University. Through an immersive public tour of Inuit drawings, prints and carvings, Sonia aims to honour Inuit sovereignty and culture, while connecting non-Inuit and Inuit communities alongside Kuzy.

From Kinngait Nunavut, Koomuatuk (Kuzy) Curley now lives on Algonquin territory in the Ottawa Valley, where he carves daily to stay connected to his Inuit upbringing, earn a living that supports his growing family, and because he loves it. With twenty years of experience as a full-time artist, he continues to honour his grandparents and other family members that taught him by choosing to carve themes of Inuit culture yet with a fresh vision that is all his own. As an artist, he constantly challenges himself to represent his subjects naturalistically while creating striking and balanced compositions.

Koomuatuk has extensive experience working on large-scale sculptures and his public art/collaborative projects include Ahqahizu for the Pan Am Games (York University 2015), Ninguaq amma Nanuq (Canadian High Arctic Research Station 2017), Pitseolak Ashoona (Kinngait Nunavut 2021), Ravine Screenings (Toronto Biennial of Art 2022) and monumental Inuksuit commissions through Canadian Consulates in New Delhi India (2014), Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam (2023) and Shenzhen China (2025). He is currently a member of the research team for the Curating Indigenous Circumpolar Cultural Sovereignty grant with York University.

✨ Join us for a special public conversation ✨

As part of Curating Reconciliation through XR at York University, we invite you to an in-conversation event exploring Inuit art, immersive storytelling, and the evolving role of digital technologies in cultural preservation.

This innovative VR exhibition brings Inuit cultural narratives into interactive, spatial environments, transforming how audiences engage with art and expanding access beyond physical space. Rooted in Indigenous-led perspectives, the project reimagines curatorial practice through collaboration, storytelling, and new media.

🎤 Featuring Sonia Singh and Artist Koomuatuk (Kuzy) Curley in conversation about the exhibition, Inuit art, digital translation, and the future of Indigenous-led exhibition practices.

This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from artists and collaborators shaping this work, offering insight into process, material, and meaning across physical and virtual worlds.

Where does immersive exhibition infrastructure fit inside a SSHRC application?

In our 2026 Canadian Innovation Grant Guide, we map three clear placements:

Research Infrastructure
Knowledge Mobilization
Graduate Student Training

SSHRC Partnership Grants fund up to 2.5 million dollars over 4 to 7 years.

When properly structured, immersive exhibition environments can function as:

• Shared research spaces
• Public knowledge mobilization platforms
• Graduate training environments

Art Gate provides the infrastructure that allows departments to clearly position these components within SSHRC applications.

At York University, the Curating Reconciliation through XR project is redefining how Indigenous cultural heritage is preserved and experienced.

This past Tuesday, we joined the team for a milestone moment: the beginning of 3D scanning dozens of Indigenous artworks and cultural objects.

This ambitious research-creation project is supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (John R. Evans Leaders Fund), the Ontario Research Fund, and key partners including York University, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Indigenous artists and cultural advisors, and Art Gate.

Together, we’re building accessible, immersive spaces for storytelling and reconciliation — with Indigenous leadership guiding the process every step of the way.
