MZTV Museum of Television The MZTV Museum and Archive seeks to protect, preserve & promote the Receiving Instruments of Television

The MZTV Museum and Archive seeks to protect, preserve and promote the Receiving Instruments of Television History. Whereas other North American Museums of Broadcasting feature Programs, ours is unique in its focus on the History of the Technology, as well as on the Sets Themselves. Together with related original papers, discs, books, magazines, toys and other ephemera the collection offers some 1

0,000 objects to scholars and students as well as the general public. The Museum’s mandate is to exhibit the world’s most comprehensive collection of North American Television Receivers for the formative fifty-year period from the 1920s to the 1970s. The MZTV Museum also aims to tell the story of the medium and to contribute to the understanding of the impact of television on the people who watch it.

In 1953, American animator and voice actor Tex Avery (best known for his work with Warner Bros. and MGM during Hollywood’s Golden Age) directed TV of Tomorrow, a short film that showcased a series of satirical television sets that would address issues with modern television sets at the time.

Some of these sets included washing machines and other household appliances with built-in screens to ensure daily chores never got in the way of watching TV, interactive sets that allowed viewers to directly engage with whatever was happening onscreen, and compartments for live-in maintenance workers.

For a peek at some of the real-life television sets that inspired the solutions proposed in TV of Tomorrow, be sure to check out the MZTV Museum of Television, right here in Toronto!
