Blackcherry Raven Art Amy Wiebe Lau (Blackcherry Raven) is a Vancouver-based contemporary abstract expressionist artist.

About the artist

Amy Wiebe Lau (Blackcherry Raven) is a Vancouver-based contemporary abstract expressionist artist whose profound journey in the art world began with an insatiable curiosity for the wonders of creation, working from her tiny studio on the unceded and ancestral territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam and Kwikwetlem Nations. From an early age, Amy fou

nd solace and inspiration in the surreal world, marvelling at its ethereal beauty and intricate design of the abstract. This profound connection with abstraction and fractal imagery ignited a spark within her, compelling her to translate her awe and admiration onto canvas. Amy creates captivating and unique pieces that explore themes of nephomancy inspired by the divination of clouds, light, and chaos between space and beauty. Driven by an innate desire to express her vision and emotions, Amy felt an unyielding need to create something out of nothing, to breathe life into her thoughts and feelings. Art became her chosen medium of communication, a gateway through which she could share her unique perspective with the world. For Amy, creating art is a transformative process that allows her to transcend the limitations of words and delve into the depths of her imagination. As an artist, Amy believes in the power of art to ignite change, challenge societal norms, and evoke deep emotions. She holds strong values of authenticity, empathy, and inclusivity, using her art as a platform to shed light on social issues and promote justice. Inspired by various social movements, she actively seeks to create works that resonate with the struggles and aspirations of marginalized communities, giving voice to the voiceless through her creative expression. While Amy draws inspiration from many pop surrealist, low-brow artists, these individuals have indelibly impacted her artistic journey. These visionaries include Mark Ryden, Gary Baseman, Audrey Kawasaki, Todd Schorr, Tara McPherson, Camille Rose Garcia, Bansky, and Frida Kahlo. Their groundbreaking contributions to the art world have inspired her to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and embrace the limitless possibilities of artistic expression. Amy's chosen medium, a combination of resin and alcohol inks, was a deliberate choice driven by her desire to capture the vibrancy and fluidity of the cosmos. This unique combination allows her to bring her ethereal visions to life, creating paintings that exude a sense of wonder and fascination. She aims to create an immersive experience with each fluid movement, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the mesmerizing dance of colours and textures. When Amy paints, memories intertwine with the present, transporting her to moments suspended in time. The airbrush becomes an extension of her emotions, weaving a personal and universal narrative. Each stroke holds a fragment of her experiences, a snapshot of her journey, and a tribute to the intricate tapestry of life. Her artistic journey has been transformative, marked by self-discovery, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of growth. Through countless hours spent honing her craft, Amy has embraced the challenges and triumphs of being an artist, allowing them to shape her into the creative force she is today. In the creation flow, Amy enters a state of profound concentration and connection with classical early music to indie music to the dark eighties. Time loses its hold as she surrenders to the process, allowing emotions to flow freely onto the wooden canvas. In this state, she experiences a kaleidoscope of feelings: chaos, passion, vulnerability, and liberation. Through her art, she strives to evoke similar emotions in others, to create a space where individuals can explore their inner worlds and find solace amidst the chaos. Amy's art business is a labour of love, created to reach hearts and minds. She is driven by a deep desire to connect with individuals who share her appreciation for the beauty of the expressionist world and seek art that stimulates introspection and dialogue. Her art business is an extension of her commitment to positively impacting her community, using her art to foster conversations, promote social justice, and inspire change. As she gazes into the future of art, Amy envisions a realm where creativity knows no bounds. She believes that art will continue to evolve, embracing new technologies and pushing the boundaries of traditional mediums. The future holds infinite possibilities, where artists will continue to challenge societal norms, provoke emotions, and question the status quo. Amy has found her voice, purpose, and connection to the world in her artistic journey. Through her captivating and unique creations, she invites viewers to embark on a transformative journey, bridging the gap between art and the cosmos and igniting the flames of inspiration in their hearts.

CALL FOR SUPPORT LETTERS (Port Moody – City of the Arts)

Port Moody has a “City of the Arts” identity—but we still don’t have enough affordable, practical artist studio space. Right now, the former Moody Elementary building is vacant, and I’m proposing a time-limited, reversible pilot to activate it as:
Moody Creative and Movement Hub

Affordable artist suites in classrooms (working studios + community workshops)
Gym programming for supervised roller skating/workshops, yoga, mobility/dance + wellness
A pilot approach (12–18 months) that keeps the future of the site flexible

I’m collecting short letters of support to include with my submission to the City of Port Moody + SD43.
A letter can be just 3–6 sentences (even a paragraph in an email helps!).
If you’re willing, please DM me or email me at [email protected] and include:
1. Your name and connection to Port Moody
2. Why this matters to you/community
3. A sentence supporting a feasibility review/pilot exploration

Deadline: Friday, January 16th, 2026.

Please share this post with artists, skaters, wellness folks, local businesses, parents—anyone who wants to see this space brought to life.

Hello friends,

It’s been a while. Life has been full, shifting, expanding and though the art has been quiet, it’s never left me. The brushes are waiting, the inks are calling, and the next wave of creation is coming.

I’m still here and art-making will be back soon.
