We had a wonderful visit with some of the folks at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach, who are always delighted to explore the beautiful indigenous art and select a few special gifts. Their enthusiasm and appreciation for the unique craftsmanship create such a warm and joyful atmosphere during each visit.

Had a great visit with Tim in the gallery, acquired this this exceptional transformation rattle, perfect for ceremonial use or as a remarkable addition to any collection. Expertly carved from rich red cedar, it features stunning abalone inlay and is adorned with finely crafted cedar rope. The base, also made from red cedar, adds to its cohesive beauty and natural elegance, making it a truly captivating piece of artistry.

Tim Alfred, of Kwakiutl heritage, was born in 1967 in Alert Bay, British Columbia. He began carving in the celebrated Kwakiutl style at the age of 20, receiving primary instruction from Stanley Hunt, with additional influence from Wayne Alfred, Beau Dick, and Calvin Hunt. As a young artist, he mastered techniques such as crafting bentwood boxes, planking cedar trees, carving masks, paddles, and model canoes, as well as creating regalia for traditional ceremonies in the Big House. His notable projects include drums and paddles made for Fort Rupert Elementary School in 1998, along with memorial trophies and numerous donations to community fundraising efforts, including contributions to the Big House in Alert Bay. Today, his works are proudly displayed in various galleries, the museums of Alert Bay, the Royal British Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, and in private collections across the West Coast.

We are thrilled to introduce a remarkable new artist to the gallery, overflowing with creativity and skill. Esther’s handcrafted toddler moosehide moccasins are an absolute delight—charming, meticulously made, and sure to capture hearts. These adorable treasures are destined to be cherished keepsakes, holding sentimental value long after your child or grandchild has grown, serving as a beautiful reminder of precious early years.

Esther Mueller was born in Bella Coola on the coast of British Columbia and grew up both there and in the interior of the province. She is Tsilhqot'in (Chilcotin) and a proud member of the Tl'etinqox First Nation in Alexis Creek, BC. Esther began beading and making moccasins at the age of 10, taught by her late mother and grandmother, who instilled in her a love for sewing that she has carried throughout her life. Her passion for beading never waned; while others were off doing different activities, she often chose to stay behind, spending hours perfecting her craft and exploring new designs. She fondly recalls creating beaded brooches and earrings, selling them to save for more materials to fuel her creativity. Over the years, Esther has completed large, commissioned pieces for several First Nations Bands in her region, and her artistry has reached places as far as Germany, Hungary, and New York. Through her work, Esther feels deeply connected to her culture and close to the loved ones who taught her, finding immense joy in knowing that people cherish the pieces she creates.

We’re open six days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but on Mondays, we kick back and enjoy a well-deserved day off.
