“Ways to Eat a Fig” (2025)
Oil on canvas linen blend, 48 x 60 in.

GRACE KALYTA (b. 1991, Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Montreal based artist whose paintings and sculptures explore pursuits and performances of abundance in self-design, adornment, and spectacle. Kalyta collects images from online spaces that are dedicated to the quick circulation of objects and materials, cropping and enlarging throw-away images to create confrontational compositions. Through image-sourcing and the integration of decorative elements, Kalyta provokes high-low dichotomies in class and value systems, seduction and splendour, and the interplay of presentation and perception in material self-realization.
Kalyta received a BFA in 2018 with Honours from Concordia University and is currently a MFA candidate at Concordia University. Kalyta has attended residencies in Iceland (Nes Residency, 2021) and Greece (faveLAB, 2019). Previous select exhibitions include: Hall of Mirrors (2024), Pangée, Give Me An Inch (2024) at Pipeline Gallery, London, UK, Thank You, I’m rested now. I’ll have the lobster today, thank you. (2024), at Margot Samel, NY + Pangée, Montreal, Northern Exposure (2024), at Praz Delavallade, LA, with National Gallery of Canada and Pangée, Foultitude (2023) at Projet Casa, Montreal, Maskenfreiheit (2023), at Margot Samel, NY, Spaghetti Western (2022) at GHAM & DAFE, Montreal; Opið Hùs (2021) Skagaströnd, Iceland; Privé (2020), Montreal; Textile Quintet (2019) at Pirgos Tsikaliotis, Leonidio, Greece, 2019, and On the Pulse (2018), Eastern Bloc, Montreal. A little over a month ago, I had the pleasure of curating a small archival exhibition on Montreal apartment-galleries from the 1980s to today. The exhibition, which was satellite to a panel discussion presented at the CCA, was hosted in a beautiful apartment generously loaned by M. Edmund Nash.

With the generous guidance of Vincent Bonin, I spent nearly six months researching exhibitions that took place in apartments across the city, a project I hope to continue developing and eventually turn into a book.

Until then, the full documentation of the exhibition, checklist and image index is now available on the Espace Maurice website.

A special thank you to Chloe Latour & .mag for co-hosting this event and for being such tremendous support. And to Stephanie Alexe Hébert for assisting with the install.

Thank you to everyone that took time to talk with me, send me images, loaned work & etc. This research has been so invigorating.

🏠🌳

LES RAMSAY (b. 1976) is a Vancouver‑based contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice weaves together painting, sculpture, needlepoint, and found/digital imagery.

Ramsay holds a BFA from Emily Carr University (with an exchange at Universitat de Bellas Artes, Valencia, Spain) and earned his MFA in Painting from Concordia University in 2015.

His work draws on domestic craft, folk art, textiles, and digital drawing layered with recycled household objects, employing both constructive and deconstructive methods. Ramsay’s compositions often combine organic forms, figure, text, and fractured landscapes—creating environments where memory, nostalgia, and the everyday intermingle.

His art has been exhibited widely across Canada, Europe, and the U.S., and is represented by Marion Scott Gallery, Vancouver.

☀️

TIMOTHÉ BORN (b. 1999) is a self-taught painter based in Montreal. His work draws from folk traditions as well as his own material and craft processes, often using personal and cultural memory as a subject through which he can achieve uncomplicated expression.

His work has recently been exhibited at La Centrale, Montreal in a group exhibition organised by Super Boat People.

Side view: Les Ramsay, “Untitled” (2025), oil on upholstery, 12x10in; 30,48x25,4cm.

From the exhibition text:

“In his Mystic Writing Pad, Freud proposed a model of memory as a layered surface: a wax layer that retains permanent impressions, hidden beneath a transparent sheet, which can be refreshed and marked anew. What remains and what is newly inscribed reflects the mind’s capacity to hold both enduring unconscious traces and conscious perception.

In the semi-detached living room it was always there. The first painting I ever saw. Houses interlocked between naked trees– warm textured yellows. I remember tracing the surface with my fingers. I remember laying backwards on the dark green couch, my feet defiantly up against the wall. Town has changed a lot since then. “

Wind Shake is on view this Saturday from noon to 5pm, Timothé Born will be present.

Espace Maurice 2021-2025
aurevoir: exclamation goodbye until we meet again, origin: late 17th century: from French, literally ‘to the seeing again’

It is with great sadness, but also profound gratitude that Espace Maurice is closing its physical location.
April 19th, 2025. This Friday and Saturday will be your last chance to come catch a glimpse of the group exhibition: Greetings, Mary Garden, or visit the space. I will be gallery-sitting from noon to 5pm. Do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to see the work outside of visiting hours, I will do my best to accommodate.

Thank you thank you for taking part, attending, supporting & caring.

Porcelain, cosmetic makeup brush bristles, Hermes Silky Blush powder in ‘Rose Plume’ and Dior Rouge Blush in ‘Poison’

Matt Morris’ delicate ceramic make-up brushes and the little bottle of eau de toilette, are placed in the apartment. Over a small pile of book, at the food of a Perguande candle holder, on the dining table, and on the window sill, as if Mary Garden had left them there — scattered whimsically, while distracted by a song or an amorous thought.

The gallery is closed today for a private event, but will be open one last time next Friday & Saturday.

“Opera has the power to warn you that you have wasted your life. You haven’t acted on your desires. You’ve suffered a stunted, vicarious existence. You’ve silenced your passions. The volume, height, depth, lushness and excess of operatic utterance reveal, by contrast, how small your gestures have been until now, how impoverished you physicality; you have only used a fraction of your bodily endowment, and your throat is closed.”
Wayne Koestenbaum, The Queen’s Throat : Opera, Homosexuality And The Mystery of Desire (1993)
