GUM Gallery Welcome to GUM Gallery, short for the “Gallery of Unsellable Masterpieces”.

What happens when forgotten memory meets digital code? 🎨🤖

In Systems of Perception, artist Caleb Sandblom transforms a collection of old photographic negatives into black-and-white paintings, sequences of printed binary code ("OFF" and "ON"), spoken language, and soundscapes. At each stage, the original images shift into something entirely new, inviting us to reflect on what is preserved, what is lost, and how technology patterns human thought.

Join us for an engaging evening of music, art, and storytelling with Bill Monahan. Bill will share insights from his journey through the Canadian music scene, playing select recordings and drawing from his book, Two Dollar Cover: Under The Underground And Over The Hills. He’ll also dive into the creative visual world of album and CD cover design, exploring everything from custom, artist-made packaging to corporate production.

Caleb Sandblom explores the intersection of human identity and technology, viewing the self as a “networked cyborg” shaped by its tools. His practice blends drawing and painting with digital processes: collaging, scanning, and plotting, to challenge the boundary between machine and hand. Sandblom’s work invites viewers to rethink how technology patterns our perception.

Come and see Justin Mezzapelli's Bread Tag Triptych at GUM Gallery!

Accumulated and arranged in large numbers, the bread tags begin to lose their everyday identity. Reds, greens, yellows, purples and whites become blocks of colour. Their repeated outlines create rhythm. Rows become patterns, while mirrored arrangements produce larger symmetrical forms. From a distance, the individual bread tag almost disappears into the composition.

The BUILDING PROJECT by Francesca Vivenza!

Attracted by the visual marking of the orange flagging tapes in the Canadian wilderness, knotted to the lower branches to mark a trail, Francesca is attracted to their conceptual implication – to find the way home.

The Flagging Tape House is constructed out of one inch-wide neat, tense lines when pulled, but the tape becomes a messy mound of coils when collapsed, opening the mind to malleable, sequential design possibilities.

Here's anothe piece by Rupen that turns out to be much more complex than your first glance would suggest: 'B/DH/S/WB/DG' is a dark grey panel with a similar grid of dots. The discovery that some of the dots are perfectly flush nail-heads is surprising enough; more surprising still is realizing that some of the black dots are not marks, but holes drilled into the surface. Once again, some of the nodes are missing, and amongst the points that remain, a different set of rules determine their physical expression. The apparent simplicity of the pattern conceals a surprisingly complex set of decisions.

Another piece by Rupen demonstrating the remarkable subtlety of his work.

Titled 'DB: L/H/L', the name pays homage to David Bowie’s legendary 'Berlin' trilogy: 'Low', 'Heroes', and 'Lodger'. The artwork consists of three distinct panels, each sized proportionately to the runtime of its respective album. Vertical grooves divide each panel to match the length of Sides A and B, and the colors are inspired by each record’s cover art.
