Meet Bonnie Steinberg, SCA-LIFE, CSPC,TWS IWS — juror for the Representational category of the SCA Elected Membership Exhibition.

Born in Toronto, Bonnie is a practicing artist and a popular art teacher, working primarily in transparent watercolour. She is a guest artist and instructor for groups across Canada, the US, and Europe, with her teaching placing special emphasis on architectural elements within urban and rural landscapes. Bonnie currently teaches watercolour workshops and ongoing classes both in person and via Zoom, and returns to Le Monastère, France this summer for a teaching trip, following a similar visit in 2024.

Bonnie’s passion for colour and light comes through in her bold, instantly recognizable brushwork. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University, and is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Society of Canadian Artists, and the International Watercolour Society, as well as a signature and platinum member of the Toronto Watercolour Society.

Most recently, her painting “Waiting for Spring” was selected by the CSPWC for inclusion in the Royal Project gift — a milestone marking the 100th anniversary of the CSPWC that will place 100 exceptional Canadian watercolours in the Royal Collection Trust of King Charles III at Windsor Castle

Meet Kathy Hildebrandt, ASA, SCA-Hon, PAC, AFCA, ISAP, PSA, IAPS/MC — juror for the Representational category of the SCA Elected Membership Exhibition.



Kathy is an international award-winning artist and instructor specializing in contemporary realism. Though primarily a pastellist, she also works in acrylic, watercolour, and oil.



Her honours include top awards in the Annual Pastel 100 and the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) exhibition. Her work has been published in the Pastel Journal and the “Strokes of Genius” book series, and exhibited across Canada and at galleries including the Vose Gallery in Boston and the National Arts Club in New York City. She was also invited to the 2nd Biennial International Pastel Exhibition in Suzhou, China, where her work now sits in the permanent collection of the Pastel Museum of Art.



A signature member of numerous national and international societies, Kathy was named an Eminent Pastelist of Canada — the highest level of recognition in the pastel medium — and has served as Past President of both Pastel Artists.CA and the Society of Canadian Artists.

Meet Andrew McDermott, IAPS/EP, IAPS/MC, SFCA — juror for the Contemporary category of the SCA Elected Membership Exhibition.



“It is better to paint for one minute a day than to think about it for 24 hours a day; one learns more in that one minute of painting than in thinking about it for 24 hours.”



Andrew is the past President and a senior member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Born in Bolton, England, he moved to Canada at a young age and, after graduating college in Graphic Design and Illustration, went on to develop his own distinctive style — winning top awards across Canada, the US, and China. Among his proudest honours are the Eminent Pastel Medallion and the Master Circle Medallion from the International Association of Pastel Societies.



His work has been featured in numerous publications, including full features in The Artist magazine, International Artist, The Artist UK, Pastel World, Magazin’art, and the Pastel Journal. A popular workshop instructor, Andrew teaches life and figure drawing and painting for the Illustration and Animation department at Capilano University, as well as the Animation departments at Vancouver Film School and Think Tank.

Congratulations to Julia Lockie!

Julia has won an Honourable Mention in the SCA’s 58th Juried Exhibition, “HOME,” for her artwork Abbrazzu (Enclosed) — a 17” x 17” mixed media piece with collaged ephemera and handmade papers, acrylic paint, photo transfers and mediums, and charcoal drawing on paper, mounted on cradle panel.

In her own words:
“To me, home is less a physical place than a feeling. Human beings strive to make where they live feel like home because it is more than bricks and mortar, more than furniture and possessions. Home is where we feel safe, where our customs and traditions take root, where memories accumulate, and where we become part of the fabric of a community. Perhaps we understand the meaning of home most clearly when we witness those who have lost it through natural disasters, conflict, or war.

Travel offers another way of understanding home. Stepping outside our own familiar world broadens our appreciation of privilege, safety, history, and belonging. It is only by stepping outside our own experience that we begin to appreciate the many ways people create a sense of home. During an art retreat in Sicily in 2025, I was struck by the extraordinary depth of its history, the architecture left by successive cultures, the visible scars of war, and the remarkable diversity of its people and neighbourhoods.

This body of work responds to my experience of Sicily not as a postcard, but as a rubbing. I was deeply moved by the coexistence of beauty and hardship: boarded-up windows beside elegant apartments, crumbling buildings neighbouring ancient churches, and reminders of conflict woven into everyday life. Amid these contrasts, people continued to build lives, communities, and a sense of home. My work reflects that experience, exploring home not as a destination but as something created through resilience, memory, and belonging.”

Congratulations to Andrew Wang!

Andrew has won the Technical Excellence Award in the Contemporary category of the SCA’s 58th Juried Exhibition, “HOME,” for his artwork Metropolis — a 60” x 80” x 4” diptych of folded paper, mounted on wood and encased in an acrylic case.

In his own words:

“Andrew unearths great journeys through origami assemblage, influenced by his experience as a second-generation Canadian. ‘We are keenly aware of our “otherness,” wondering if we truly belong. I fold hundreds of origami birds to honour the hardships and sacrifices made by my parents’ generation. As I lay each bird in its place, I realize that the journey continues — I am still finding my way, to be accepted, by others, by myself.’

The process is a cathartic, meditative practice — always striving for perfection, taking joy in the completion of each small task, the culmination of thousands of motions to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Metropolis celebrates the place I call home: a great city created with various boroughs full of diversity and the flow of people, in, out, and between, like a living organism. Each borough is distinct in its own character. It celebrates the community and the individual journey of finding home.”

Congratulations to Wendy Wallace!

Wendy has won an Honourable Mention in the SCA’s 58th Juried Exhibition, “HOME,” for her artwork Half Light — watercolour and gouache on cotton paper.

In her own words:

“Half Light refers to dusk, the in-between time between day and night. This painting is also caught between not only the ending light of the day, but the bridge between winter and spring. This piece is a collage of two paintings; during the winter, my home is in Oshawa, bordering Lake Ontario. This piece completes my interpretation of home. Sometimes a place is more home than where you come from, but what you have experienced.”

Congratulations to Nancy Steele!

Nancy has won the Artistic Expression Award in the Representational category of the SCA’s 58th Juried Exhibition, “HOME,” for her oil on canvas painting Gathering for Tea.

In her own words:

“’Gathering for Tea’ represents so much of home. The tea cups and saucers, tea tray, the women talking, the settee, and afternoon light are generational — we stand on their shoulders. Our homes reflect their influences. Most importantly, the power of meaningful conversational dialogue promotes understanding and respect. From the home we learn to love, live, and promote a community where diversity is celebrated and all voices allowed.

I want to paint as if I were sculpting in air — somehow managing to convince viewers that, in the case of ‘Gathering for Tea,’ two people, maybe three, are in conversation, the sun is out, and the smell of brewing tea is in the air.”

Congratulations to Bonnie Sheckter!

Bonnie has won the 1st Award of Distinction in the Representational category of the SCA’s 58th Juried Exhibition, “HOME,” for her artwork Songs from My Homeland — coloured pencil on drafting film.

In her own words:

“I encountered this street musician playing a vintage accordion. I gave him some money and obtained his permission to photograph him. He was delighted to do so and posed for several photos. I particularly loved this one, with his heartfelt expression — I could well imagine him thinking of playing songs back in Italy with his accordion that had been handed down through generations. I ‘restored’ his battered accordion in my drawing, and placed an ocean behind him, to enhance the idea of him traveling back in his memories, to another time, another home.”
