Happy Thanksgiving from Rossland Gardens.

From the second-floor window of our secret hideaway bedroom, the naturalized garden is beautiful in its autumn colours. Grasses catch the afternoon light, seed heads hold their shape, and the paths invite a slower walk, the benches invite you to sit and take in the views.

Thanksgiving weekend is our last weekend of the regular season. Join us October 8 –12, from 11:00–4:30, for an autumn visit to the gardens and gallery, and a little something for your Thanksgiving table.

Our 2026 Rossland Gardens Preserves Collection brings together the flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables we have gathered and grown throughout the season:

• Floral and herb jellies: lilac, peony, lemon balm and spearmint.

• Fruit jellies: mulberry, blackcap raspberry, wild grape, ground cherry with lemon, heritage apple with chervil, and rosehip.

• Savoury preserves: dill/garlic pickles, hummus, pickled purple French beans, spiced pickled beetroot or swiss chard stems, summer squash relish, fermented honey garlic, golden carrot apple and date chutney, and our signature late harvest relish.

• Botanical bundles: Palo santo, sweetgrass, lavender and white sage, tied with jute

Our 2026 Farmgate collection preserves are pick up only. These make wonderful hostess gifts, and would be a beautiful thing to serve this Thanksgiving. We also have a limited number of chocolate almond courgette loaves, and spiced summer squash spice loaves that are frozen - just thaw and serve. We are sold out of bounty boxes for the season.

We are grateful for the harvest, for the artists whose work fills our gallery, and for everyone who has made the journey to visit us this season. Your purchases and encouragement help sustain the work Ross and I continue here.

A basket of wild grapes, brought into the farmhouse at the end of an autumn day.

The harvest finds its way into our living spaces: grapes waiting in an old wooden basket, herbs hanging to dry, and the kitchen at the centre of it all. Growing and gathering food gives the season a presence throughout the house.

At Rossland Gardens, hospitality begins long before we set the table—with tending, harvesting, preserving, and considering what we might share.

A brief look inside Gallery Rossland Gardens.

We have renewed the Rossland Gardens YouTube channel and will now be sharing new films more regularly. Our newest film offers a glimpse inside the gallery, where Canadian fine craft is presented within the historic setting of our Amherst Island farmstead.

Future films will feature exhibitions, Canadian artists and makers, the continuing restoration and stewardship of Rossland Gardens, seasonal events, and the curated botanical gardens through the year.

Yesterday, Rossland Gardens welcomed guests from as far away as the Ottawa Valley to a Community Drum Circle as part of on Amherst Isand.

The evening brought together several elements of what we are building here: a restored historic farmstead, a gallery of Canadian fine craft, curated botanical gardens, and opportunities for people to gather and share meaningful cultural experiences.

Joanne Macksey led the circle with warmth and care. Afterwards, guests enjoyed refreshments, the 2026 collection of Rossland Gardens preserves and time in the gallery, while illuminated paths extended the evening into the gardens.

Those illuminated paths represent a lasting addition to the property, and we are grateful to for making them possible. Ross built sculptural wooden supports for the lights, bringing his craftsmanship into the landscape.

Thank you to Joanne, our guests and everyone who helped make the evening possible. Education is at the heart of this Saturday’s Community Drum Circle Experience.

Alongside drumming and song, Joanne Macksey, who is on a journey of discovering her Métis heritage, will share selected objects and materials from her personal collection. These pieces offer tangible ways to explore art-making, symbolism, ceremony and the cultural practices Joanne has spent many years learning.

More than a display, the collection creates opportunities to look closely, listen and ask respectful questions—to consider how objects can carry memory, identity, personal history and teaching.

No previous knowledge is expected. Curiosity, respect and a willingness to learn are enough.

The drum is felt as much as heard. Its steady beat travels through the body, gathers our attention and gives the mind something simple and constant to follow. As the rhythm continues, the noise of everyday thought can begin to recede. Around a circle, many people gradually settle into one shared pulse.

Within many Indigenous traditions, the drum is understood as a heartbeat. For Joanne Macksey, who in the process of learning about her own Métis heritage, it is also deeply personal. She made her drum in honour of her sister after losing her, as part of her own healing journey.

You are welcome to bring your own drum on Saturday. If you do not have one, we will have a few available to share and circulate throughout the experience. You do not need to own a drum—or have any previous experience—to participate.

This is where we will gather.

Beside the ancient apple orchard, the Grassy Knoll Gathering Garden opens beneath an expansive island sky. Curving banks of grass surround the circle—a place Ross and I have thoughtfully shaped for conversation, music and time together outdoors.

On Saturday, September 26, we’ll welcome you here for our Drum Circle Experience, presented as part of Culture Days.

Join Joanne Macksey, who is of Métis heritage and belongs to a circle in Eden Mills, for an afternoon of drumming, song and learning. People of all backgrounds are welcome.

We look forward to seeing this quiet garden filled with people, voices and the sound of drums.

One week from today, the sound of Joanne Macksey’s drum will carry through the gardens at Rossland Gardens.

Joanne, who is of Métis heritage and a member of the Eden Mills drum circle, will lead this free Culture Days gathering beside the ancient orchard. Together, we will share drumming, songs and stories.

No experience is needed, and people of all backgrounds are welcome. Registration is required via our website.
