Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead National Historic Site We are the birthplace of Adelaide Hunter, a champion of women's education and domestic science.

Situated in the rolling hills of Brant County, the Adelaide Hunter Hoodless Homestead is the birthplace and childhood home of a Canadian original. Adelaide's father, David Hunter, purchased the Homestead from John Bray (War of 1812 veteran) in 1852 and the family owned the property until 1906.

Many works from the Victorian times have noticeable errors, however, many were intentional. But why?

When making household items, such as quilts, and furniture, intentional mistakes were made to show that humanmade works would always pale in comparison to the creations made by God.

Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote one of Canada’s most well known books… but how did someone from PEI write a book that would go on to be an international sensation?

Born in Prince Edward Island, L.M Montgomery completed her novel Anne of Green Gables in 1905. While she would have a hard time getting it published at first, she was given a chance by L.C Page. Her book was a near instant success.

The shared themes of freedom, family, and the overcoming of hardships resonated with many 20th century people, resonating especially with the orphans of Japan after the conclusion of World War II.

With her books translated in 37 languages, and with her work drawing thousands of people to PEI every year, LM Montgomery’s legacy still lingers as she remains one of Canada’s most well-known authors.

Did you know the phrase “Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite” has its origins in Victorian times?

During this era, almost everything had to be made locally, and so mattresses were constructed with hay and other soft materials they would gather on the farm.

However, oftentimes this hay would attract unwanted pests–such as bedbugs, which would then bite you in your sleep!

Did you know that pocket watches in the Victorian period were a sign of wealth?

Before the invention of the railroad, not everyone had a need for a time-keeping device– especially here in rural Ontario, where people just relied on the sun to tell the time.

David Hunter, Adelaide’s father, not only owned a pocket watch, but also an elaborate silver pocket watch stand, showcasing the status of his family in Victorian Society.

Victorians never had access to artificial refrigeration– so how did they stay cool?

Long before artificial refrigeration was commonplace, Victorian era Canada was reliant on the ice trade. During the winter months, ice would be collected from The Great Lakes and stored in Ice houses, for use during the summer.

The ice would later be used to cool food, make ice cream, and put in drinks!
