Herbert Foundation is a private foundation for contemporary art in Ghent that centers around the Collection and Archive of Annick and Anton Herbert. It focuses primarily on Conceptual Art, Minimal Art and Arte Povera. On June 20, 2013, Herbert Foundation opened its doors to the general public with its first exhibition "As if it Could". The title points to the public role the Collection has taken u

p with the establishment of the Foundation after decades of private collecting. Inspired by over three decades of collecting, Herbert Foundation provides an exhibition space and archive with pivotal works assembled by the Herbert Collection. It also provides a calendar of public and educational events designed to broaden the understanding and awareness of these artistic movements.

Herbert Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing of Giovanni Anselmo (1934 – 2023), whose work is part of the collection of Annick and Anton Herbert.

Giovanni Anselmo lived and worked in Turin. In the later 1960s he started making objects and associated himself with the Arte Povera movement. In 1968, the Galleria Sperone in Turin opened its doors for his first solo exhibition. Over the years, his work received worldwide appreciation.

Giovanni Anselmo's oeuvre refers to concepts such as matter, energy, light and how these concepts are inextricably connected to each other. Anselmo's activity as an artist could be summarized as an investigation into the essence of nature and, by deduction, as an exploration of the nature of man and his place in the universe.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Discover at Herbert Foundation

Hanne Darboven’s visual language, which develops from the act of calculating and writing, contains references to historical events and to events in her own life. As such, they reveal her literary and social interests. The works take on different forms: they are brought together on the wall or are translated into editions and publications. One of these editions is Wende >8080< marks a transition in Hanne Darboven’s work. For the first time, she translates her calendar calculations into music. The piece, which consists of 416 printed sheets and 11 LPs, comprises 14 groups which appear to differ from one another both in their contents and form. Musical scores (Opus 1 to 6) alternate with drawings of trees, calendar calculations, story clippings from the Der Spiegel magazine on the 1980 German parliamentary elections, text excerpts from Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz novel, and historical picture postcards of Hamburg. Personal, musical, biological, mathematical, political and literary sources are fused into a layered, complex ensemble in Wende >80 till January 31, 2024

A Curatorial Perspective: Between Dematerialization and Documentation."

Welkom!

Tickets: https://herbert-foundation.sumupstore.com/

De lezing begint om 14.00 uur. Tickets voor het evenement geven toegang tot de drie nieuwe tentoonstellingen bij Herbert Foundation - Loods: Hanne Darboven - Welttheater / Gilbert & George - Pink Elephants / Sol LeWitt - Grids.

We're pleased to announce our upcoming event on Sunday January 22. Join us for a talk by Koen Brams on the connection between Spillemaeckers and the Herberts. Their encounter was a milestone for the Collection, which focussed mainly on conceptual art during the first decennium.

In the beginning of ‘70s, Fernand Spillemaeckers starts gallery MTL in Brussels. It’s the start of an exciting artistic and intellectual adventure, where Annick and Anton Herbert actively participate in from 1973 onwards.

Koen Brams, independent researcher, curator, and publicist, will elaborate on the beginning of the Collection of Annick and Anton Herbert and their inspiring connection with Fernand Spillemaeckers.

Counting down… This weekend we will host a conversation between Enrico Lunghi, Yves Gevaert and Laura Hanssens at Herbert Foundation. Would you like to join us on Sunday 18 December at 10.30 a.m.? There are still tickets available via our website.

The conversation ‘A family reunion’ is part of a series of events in line with the presentation ‘It is… it isn’t…’ with which the exhibition space 106 opens its doors for the first time. All events are developed in collaboration with Bart Verschaffel (Ghent University) and focus on a selection of milestones in the development of the Herbert’s Collection. During the conversation our guests will reflect on the exhibition ‘Many Colored Objects Placed Side by Side’, held at Casino Luxembourg in 2000. The young institute, led by Enrico Lunghi, was a surprising choice for the second public exhibition of the Collection. Along with the first exhibition, which took place in 1985 at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the project in Luxembourg marked a turning point in the development of the Herbert Collection and therefore couldn't be missed in this sequence of events. The conversation is complemented by an archive presentation.

Welcome this Sunday at Herbert Foundation!

'Distance Extended / 1979 – 1997. Part II' presents a dialogue between works, documents and music by Dan Graham, Mike Kelley, Martin Kippenberger, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Dieter Roth, Franz West, and Heimo Zobernig. Starting from their ensembles within the Collection and Archive, the exhibition examines the common ground these artists share.

Intrigued to explore the similarities between these artists in the Collection, and conversely learn what exactly sets them apart? Join us today at Herbert Foundation and visit our ongoing exhibition 'Distance Extended / 1979 – 1997. Part II' at Loods and 'It is... It isn't...' at 106. Join us on Sunday 18 December for the conversation ‘A family reunion’ with Enrico Lunghi and Yves Gevaert at Herbert Foundation.

In 2000, the Collection of Annick and Anton Herbert was invited by Casino Luxembourg, which was led by Enrico Lunghi. The exhibition was accompanied by an autonomous publication, realised by Yves Gevaert.

Herbert Foundation invites Enrico Lunghi and Yves Gevaert to look back in conversation with Laura Hanssens. Our guests will engage in dialogue about the preparations for the exhibition, the choice and the meaning of the title, the selection of the works, their presentation in the spaces of the Casino and the publication. Above all, we will reflect upon the significance of this exhibition for the further development of the Collection and how it formed the basis for the Foundation. The conversation is complemented by an archive presentation. Afterwards, we are happy to invite you for a drink to discuss, reflect and exchange thoughts on the conversation.
