Nasir Ali Mamun (born July 1, 1953, Old Dhaka) is a legendary Bangladeshi portrait photographer, widely celebrated as the pioneer of portrait photography in Bangladesh. Endearingly called "The Poet with the Camera" (Camerar Kobi) by poet Shamsur Rahman, Mamun began experimenting with photography in the late 1960s without formal training. By 1972, he dedicated himself to portraiture a virtually unexplored genre in Bangladesh at the time.

Over the last five decades, he has built an extraordinary visual record of the nation’s cultural, artistic, and intellectual giants.

Mamun’s signature style relies on evocative black-and-white imagery, natural lighting, and candid settings rather than artificial studio glamour. He approaches photography as a poetic "dialogue between two souls," capturing the emotional depth and raw humanity of his subjects. His iconic portraits include world-renowned figures such as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mother Teresa, Stephen Hawking, S M Sultan, Shamsur Rahman, and Muhammad Yunus.

Since his first solo exhibition at the Bangla Academy in 1977, Mamun has staged over sixty solo shows worldwide, including landmark projects like Joy Bangabandhu and Shataborshe Sultan. In recognition of his immense contribution to Bangladeshi arts, he has been honored with the Ekushey Padak (2025), the Shilpakala Padak (2017), and the Chobi Mela Lifetime Achievement Award (2017).

His lifelong body of work is preserved at Photoseum, a museum envisioned to archive and celebrate Bangladesh’s rich portrait heritage.
