Last night, Dr Moya Smith, WA Museum’s Curator of Anthropology & Archaeology, aka the Museum’s “Egyptian object super sleuth”, shared fascinating details of the Museum’s Egyptian collection with us. Starting with how the WA Museum came to own these items, and what they were thought to be, she then explained what new insights were gained using modern technology. The fact that the Museum’s mummified cat has been revealed to be no cat at all actually made the story of that object more, rather than less interesting!

Thank you to Moya for unravelling the many layers of Egyptian mysteries, and thank you to Lawson Flats for hosting the talk!

Save the date for the next talk at Lawson Flats: maritime archaeologist Corioli Souter will take us on a journey to the “Shipwrecks of the Roaring Forties”.

A WA Museum team is back in the Pilbara to continue excavating Diprotodon skeletons – the largest marsupial to ever live. The two-week dig is a partnership between the , CITIC Pacific Mining and the Foundation for the WA Museum, with the support of the Traditional Owners, the Mardudhunera People.

On Friday, our lucky competition winner, Jared, his sister Lauren, and community members including some lucky local school students, joined the fossil experts to help dig up some of the fascinating megafauna fossils. Check out what happened during their once-in-a-lifetime day trip!

A mega thank you to everyone involved in this project and making the day so special for Jared and Lauren!

18 May is International Museum Day, and this year, the theme is “Museums for Education and Research”.

What better day to share the story of one of the recent contributions to research by the WA Museum – the discovery of a new Pilbara land snail species, named Bothriembryon rocketi after Rocket, the beloved pet dog of two of our donors.

The new snail has been selected to go on display in WA Museum Boola Bardip’s Wild Life Gallery, so visitors will be able to get up close to “rugged rocketi’s” story very soon.

Over the past two nights, we’ve delved deep into the stories held by the WA Museum.
Hosted by Lawson Flats, Dr Mark Harvey gave us a fascinating glimpse into the evolution, (love) life and habitat of trapdoor spiders and other eight-legged species on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Annie Carson peeled back the many layers of building activity on the WA Museum Boola Bardip site and took a closer look at a few of the more unusual archaeological finds, like the cow’s head in the Old Goal’s latrines, the discarded rifle barrels and the cluster of mineral samples and crucibles.
Guests hung on Mark’s and Annie’s every word and lapped up their knowledge!
Thank you to both curators for their fantastic talks and to Lawson Flats and the WA Museum for helping us create two memorable evenings.
Save the date for the next talk at Lawson Flats – Dr Moya Smith will talk about “Egypt – The Facts, and the Fiction” on 18 June.

On Friday evening, WA Museum “Friend” Members and supporters of the Foundation for the WA Museum came together for an exclusive preview of the WA Maritime Museum's new exhibition JAMES CAMERON – CHALLENGING THE DEEP.

As WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said in his remarks, James Cameron is a modern Renaissance Man - an award-winning filmmaker, deep-sea explorer, innovator, engineer and conservationist.

With the WA Museum’s huge amount of marine research and marine conservation science work and extensive marine collections, it’s fitting that the exhibition tracing James' lifelong pursuit of and achievements in deep ocean science will be on show at the WA Maritime Museum until 28 July.
