The Friends of ANZAC Cottage pay homage to this young Aussie who made the ultimate sacrifice. Deployed to Afghanistan six times- Merv, you certainly did us proud.

Another wonderful, promising, loyal young man lost. Vale Mervyn.

Thoughts today with Myrna, his Mum

Today's Last Post Ceremony honours the life of Lance Corporal Mervyn “Merv” McDonald, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2012.

Lance Corporal Mervyn McDonald was travelling aboard a United States helicopter alongside Private Nathanael Galagher when it tragically crashed in Uruzgan Province on 30 August 2012.

The incident occurred during the deadliest 24 hours for Australia since the days of the Vietnam War. During the same 24-hour period, three other Australian soldiers were killed in a devastating “green on blue” attack.

Remembered by those closest to him as positive, humble and professional, Merv served in the Australian Defence Force for 13 years and deployed to Afghanistan six times.

▶️ Join us at 4.30 pm AEST as we share his story and remember his service: https://brnw.ch/21x5iiQ

You have either just seen or just missed Book Week. It is hard to miss, as people everywhere have been dressing up as their favourite book characters, with some wondrous sights to behold.

The Friends of ANZAC Cottage thank our ever-vigilant Philippe from France for sending through this lovely image from one of the best-known and loved authors, May Gibbs.

The characters from our earliest reading experiences tend to stay with us into adulthood and still bring us joy.

It is International Dog Day today-your tasks are to provide extra tummy rubs, doggie treats and try to replicate the love and trust your faithful friend gives you.

"Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made." Roger Caras

Sorry, not sorry for being proud of my poppies. As I look out of my study window, their presence is a constant reminder of the devotion and commemoration that built ANZAC Cottage.

I wonder, too if, with all of the death and destruction around them, those who admired the Flanders Field poppies so long ago, felt a little heartened by the sight of these bright, but delicate blooms.

The wonderful people who give their time, skills, and support to preserve and share our heritage are often overlooked, but their work is priceless because they keep the fascinating stories of our past alive.

Thank you to all- you are amazing!!

Today, the Friends of ANZAC Cottage pause to remember those who fought in the Vietnam War as we commemorate the Battle of Long Tan.

The amazing work of Rob Cox OAM and Pete Ramsay BEM, as presidents of the Vietnam Veterans of Australia (WA Branch), in restoring ANZAC Cottage makes not only a huge heritage statement but also a testament to the character of these two and their mates.

Our "Nui Dat" bus stop is an everyday memorial commemorating the men and women who served in this devastating conflict.

Thank you for your service.

Today marks the last day of National Youth Volunteer Week.

Now, I am not a violent woman, but just recently there have been remarks in the news stating that our young ones are "lazy" and uneducated
NOT TRUE!!!

The Friends of ANZAC Cottage have had nothing but positive experiences of young people willingly and happily giving up their precious time to come and assist us at ANZAC Cottage as we share the stories of this historic site. Our reward has been not only the chance to get to know these youngsters, who promise a bright future for themselves, but also for us, more mature citizens.

How proud we have been to see them disperse to universities around the world, to the beginnings of a brilliant career and to bright futures.

Our youth are amazing people who balance studies, volunteering, social life, and living with grace, joy, and a dedication that promises great things.

Thank you to our wonderful young helpers; we love and admire you and acknowledge your valuable assistance in keeping the stories of ANZAC Cottage alive.
