So true-the knowledge, wisdom and lived experience lost are irretrievable and so valuable, even in this modern world.

Respect and honour to our seniors who have lived and learnt.

Calling Mount Hawthorn boys and girls!!.

Would you like to be a part of our Sunset Service at historic ANZAC Cottage on Remembrance Day, 11 November, from 5pm to 6pm?

The Friends of ANZAC Cottage are looking for 2 boys and 2 girls aged from 10-13 to read some short letters during our Sunset Service.

Thank you to the men and women who selflessly serve our community and work hard to protect us.

We remember and honour those who gave their lives for us.

Can you imagine Marjorie's joy when her granddaughter, Simone, chose to have her wedding ceremony with Daniel at her much-loved ANZAC Cottage?

Even more so when Renee, Simone's sister, was the bridesmaid, as Marjorie's sister, Doreen, was many years earlier. was her bridesmaid many years before.

Such a wonderful family day, full of memories and love, at ANZAC Cottage.

In one of those quirky coincidences that often pop up in historical explorations, the early days of ANZAC Cottage seem strangely tied to ducks. This began with the raffle of 8 dozen ducks at the official opening of the Cottage in 1916.

This was followed by a duck-involved crime that caused outrage.

"The champion mean thief visited Anzac Cottage early on Good Friday morning and stole three young ducks which Private Porter had taken a delight in rearing. Can any reader fittingly describe the wastrel who would thus rob a wounded soldier?" (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article148342902)

So it seemed fitting that a collection of ducks in all shapes and sizes became a feature of the Cottage, on display at our Open Days.

The Friends of ANZAC Cottage couldn't duck the responsibility and now have their ducks in a row!

Did you know?

There was once a plan to turn Kalgoorlie Street into an"Avenue of Trees"

"A letter was received from the president of the Ladies' Patriotic Guild, suggesting that, with a view of beautifying the district and honouring our boys at the front, certain streets should be designated Honour Avenues, and trees planted by friends of soldiers, with name plates attached, recognising their services in the great war. It was resolved that the officers of the association[Mount Hawthorn Progress Association] should confer with the Ladies' Guild, and report to the next meeting."(http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article27482058)

and the proposal from the Ladies Patriotic Guild:

"Kalgoorlie-st. is to be made an "Avenue of Honor" and trees planted with inscribed plates attached bearing the names of representatives of the district in the great war.(http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article148244977)

The reason this worthy suggestion did not materialise could be that, in August 1916 (one month after the above considerations), it was mooted that an Avenue of Honour could be installed in Kings Park. And it was!!!
