I have spent a lot of time on the National Library of Australia’s “Trove” website recently, doing my best to research bugle related events across Australia’s relatively short “white” and hence trumpet/bugle history. It seems I stumbled across Australia’s first reported instance of bugle theft.

It only took 42 years from 1788 until 1830 for the indigenous people of Australia to discover that they had been missing out on the joy of bugles, trumpet and brass music in general .😉

Welcome to my page and collection. The 1st bugle in my collection is a silver plated presentation bugle made by:

“Metzler & Co Ltd” of London.

The bugle has an additional plaque attached with the inscription:

“C.
L. B.
Merit
Corporal F. E. CROSBY
1908.”

Research suggests that this bugle was presented to Corporal Crosby in 1908, of the Church Lads Brigade. Contact with the C.L.B. Historical Archives confirms the presence of F.E.CROSBY at the Norwich Diocese CLB Halesworth Company No. 2308 in Februarary 1910, although he had progressed to the rank of Staff Sergeant by that time.

It is interesting to note that the bugle presented is from “Metzler & Co”. At any point in time several vintage bugles can be found on eBay, each bearing the stamp of the Church Lads Brigade, particularly that of Aldwich House. I wonder if this bugle pre-dates the C.L.B. sourcing and stamping their own bugles, or represents the thought of the Metzler bugle being of better quality, or if something more nefarious in terms of fake histories and forgeries available on eBay is present?
