Vietnamese Museum Australia

Vietnamese Museum Australia is a project which aims to preserve and exhibit the stories of the Vietnamese refugee settlement in Australia. After the events on 30th April 1975, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fled the country by foot or by boat in search of freedom despite the dangers of storms, pirates, diseases, and starvation at sea. UNHCR statistics for 1975 to 1997 indicated that more than

800,000 fleeing Vietnamese had arrived at refugee camps, between 200,000 to 400,000 had died at sea. It was due to the generosity of the late Malcolm Fraser and his immigration policies that permitted the first wave of 56,000 Vietnamese refugees into the country. Despite the language barriers and differences in culture and lifestyles, the first wave of Vietnamese refugees was committed to assimilating with their new community to teach and lead the way for future coming refugees. The museum will be built to honour the hardships experienced by Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Saigon in April 1975 and will preserve and display the historical artefacts collected from Vietnamese boat people during their journey to Australia. This project is an initiative of the Vietnamese Community in Australia and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Vietnamese refugee settlement in Australia. We have introduced this page to bring forward community awareness towards the project and to engage and interact with members of the community. This page will provide public updates on the progress of the project and share any upcoming activities and events that we may be running. Any enquiries and comments are welcomed on this page. The project will work closely with the community. The support of the community financially and involvement are vital for the success of the project. Viện Bảo Tàng Việt Nam Úc Châu là một dự án nhằm mục đích bảo tồn và trưng bày các di vật và câu chuyện thật của người tị nạn Việt Nam định cư trên nước Úc. Sau biến cố 30 tháng 4 năm 1975, hàng trăm ngàn người Việt bỏ nước ra đi bằng đường bộ hoặc thuyền để tìm tự do, bất chấp hiểm nguy của những cơn bão, cướp biển, bệnh và chết đói trên hành trình vượt biên. Theo thống kê của Cao Ủy Tỵ Nạn Liên Hiệp Quốc từ năm 1975 đến năm 1997 có hơn 800,000 người Việt đã đến các trại tỵ nạn, khoảng 200,000 đến 400,000 người đã mất tích trên biển. Đó là một thảm họa không thể nào quên đối với những người Việt tỵ nạn được sống sót. Trong tinh thần nhân đạo đối với người tỵ nạn của cựu Thủ Tướng Malcolm Fraser và chính sách di dân của một đất nước đa văn hóa, hơn 56,000 người Việt tỵ nạn đã được chính quyền Fraser chấp nhận định cư ở Úc. Mặc dù trước những khó khăn về ngôn ngữ, khác biệt về văn hóa và lối sống, làn sóng đầu tiên của những người tỵ nạn Việt Nam, từ hai bàn tay trắng đã cố gắng hòa nhập, thành công và đóng góp rất nhiều cho đất nước cưu mang họ, đó là một gương sáng cho các đợt tỵ nạn sau đó. Viện Bảo Tàng sẽ được xây dựng để tôn vinh những kinh nghiệm khó khăn của những người Việt tỵ nạn đã gánh chịu sau biến cố 30 tháng Tư năm 1975. Đó cũng là nơi sẽ lưu trữ các dữ kiện lịch sử của những thuyền nhân Việt Nam trong cuộc hành trình tỵ nạn của họ đến Úc. Đây là một trong những dự án để đánh dấu 50 năm định cư của Cộng đồng Người Việt Tự Do tại Úc Châu. Chúng tôi trân trọng giới thiệu trang Facebook của công trình xây dựng Viện Bảo Tàng và mong nhận được sự giúp đỡ của quý đồng hương trong công việc gây quỹ, thu thập các dữ kiện, di vật, hình ảnh, câu chuyện trong cuộc hành trình tìm tự do và định cư trên đất nước Úc.
