ON VIEW AT WEBB GALLERY

THE WEIGHT OF AIR: Amanda Buckley

‘The Weight of Air’ presents ‘Them that Hold the Weight of Air’, a handwoven linen work by Amanda Buckley, alongside a graphite rubbing made through direct contact with the weaving and four musical interpretations by Scott Buckley commissioned for the exhibition and developed from the rubbing as a graphical score. Together, the works trace how traces themselves can be revisited and transformed through many acts of response and interpretation.

Judge’s comments:

The artist’s clever use of material language to speak bilingually is so incredibly impressive to me. To construct an artefact that is accessible to anyone, yet specifically speaks a language of Q***rness and Lebaneseness offers discourse to the fact that across the entire human race, gender diversity and q***r sexuality has always existed even if some cultures did not produce records to indicate such human diversities. It is also possible that human cultural artefacts may indeed be already coded with q***r stories from the past.

Judge’s comments on Kirkley’s work:

For me the power of this work is that it undermines all assertions of gender, including assertions of trans-normatively. It shows the artist in the most vulnerable of positions performing for camera in a shower. Perhaps James is leaning hard on an Achilles-heal by showing us at his most feminine. It is a brave act to put one’s self out in this way. It is putting out there a ‘this is how you see me’ and by doing that is to reclaim the image, to reshape it, to reassert the narrative on his own terms.

Judge’s comments on Jeffries’ work:

I appreciate all kinds of aesthetics, technologies, and approaches to photography. This work drew me in immediately for its opulence… its rich velvety colourations and composition, crisp light and shadow play, her lipstick painted with a crisp sharpness too. These qualities as well as the scale-ratio of th

Q***r Here 2026 is opening tomorrow across Grey Street and Webb Galleries with twenty-two artists in our annual exhibition with Brisbane Pride.

This year’s judge is Troy-Anthony Baylis, whose practice has worked at the intersection of q***rness and Aboriginality for more than three decades. His work saw a considerable resurgence after being included in The National 2019: New Australian Art at Carriageworks, and he became the inaugural recipient of The Guildhouse Fellowship. Institutional solo exhibitions include Nomenclatures (Art Gallery of South Australia, 2020–21) and I Wanna Be Adorned (QUT Art Museum, 2023). He is currently the feature artist of the 2026 South Australian Living Artists Festival, with ‘Pile-up’ showing at Adelaide Central Gallery, and is the subject of the monograph ‘Let It Bleed’ (Wakefield Press), which traverses his output from his early years in Meanjin/Brisbane onward.

Join us for the prize celebration event on 10th September, 5–8 pm. More details to come! ✨
