'Lightning' — Sarrita King

Look closely and you can trace the path of a storm across this canvas - jagged lines splitting the surface like cracks in dry earth, or a bolt tearing through a Darwin sky.

Sarrita King grew up watching these storms roll in: the electricity, the sudden wind, the dust and rain thrown into the air all at once. Each one left her with a different pattern, a different palette. Lightning is her way of holding onto that memory.

National Reconciliation Week | 27 May – 3 June

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In - a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

We pause for National Reconciliation Week - held each year between the anniversary of the 1967 referendum and the 1992 Mabo decision. Both milestones hard won by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who had long fought for justice. Reconciliation begins with connection - with truth, with history, and with the cultures that have shaped this land for tens of thousands of years. Art has always been one of the most powerful ways to build that connection.

We reflect on that responsibility, and recommit to it.

Sorrento Contemporary stands on Bunurong Country. We acknowledge the Bunurong people as Traditional Owners of this land and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
