Presenting a sensational look back through the history of the modern n**e in Melbourne with N**ES of CHONG 2022

My first daring subject
for the durational portrait project live in a shop window in Fitzroy was the extraordinary high style local chic Eryca Green (pictured) oil on panel.

10 days of painting flesh (each 2 hrs) followed by a street fashion parade to reveal the best. See more on my fancy NEW website under PROJECTS 👈🏼

BE A N**E of CHONG

Come be Ahn Do’ed but try it n**e
The artist will make you feel seclude
Audience peers through window pane
But only sees the artist’s pain
As you behind a curtain sleep
And dream as public try to peep
It’s art it’s life it’s a costume shop
And then you hear ‘its time to stop’
T**s and bits, curves and bones
hair and prickles, whatever you own
Don’t be shy, mound, m**f or sc***ng

What is an Australian Carnivale? Does it exist, do we need one, are you a part of it? It’s my second year back at uni, diving deep into an MFA practice-led research project at VCA (where I graduated as a 21 year old fresh from country Victoria. Today I remembered this painting, Us, Brother Nature. It looks back at me, behind a headdress of horse spirit and Bendigo spring flowers, cloaked in a blanket donated to the family after the house burnt down. My big brother and I as one! One eye. Is this our Carni? Let’s see - once I open the other eye to join forces I’ll let you know. In the meantime I learn to write…..✍🏼 while the music plays. Life is a ………ole chum. 🎶 🐎 🤡 ☠️ 🎶

Thrilled to be LAUNCHING a limited edition of one of my most iconic portraits, in collaboration with

Rama-Jaara, The Royal Shepherdess (Quiet Wild series, 2012)
Lightbox Edition of 5 (2 sold)
119 x 96 x 11cm
2025

The Quiet Wild series embodies the carnivalesque, drawing on personal places and stories to create archetypal characters that subvert traditional identities and Australian folk narratives. This staged photograph depicts a young, self-possessed woman reminiscent of the Infanta Margarita from Velasquez’s Las Meninas. She playfully mimics a ‘not so’ royal shepherdess, with her hairstyle and headdress resembling a ram’s head, inspiring the title’s ‘Rama’. (Also considered Supreme Being in Hindu-centric traditions). The hand painted backdrop is Dja Dja Wurrung, Long Gully Bendigo, near our family property, a few years after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires burnt the house to the ground. The defiant figure, a symbol of resilience, a ‘phoenix rising’. The small Chinese Joss paper dog, her companion to the next incarnation.

This work is part of major collections and curated exhibitions worldwide including

Rama -The Royal Shepherdess won the Doug Moran Photography Award in 2012

For enquires please contact Chapman & Bailey or DM me. The work is installed ground floor in Abbottsford

READ ALL ABOUT IT 🗞️ The Green Room becomes a dark room in the middle of an art school. Stockdale’s recent Masters crit, presented at the VCA Artspace was beautifully ignited as her masked collaborator united faces and spaces of past and future with an unpredictable present. Twisted music box melody by Here’s what the audience (dressed as students and supervisors) had to say.

“Everything is connecting to each other, repeated motifs and symbols, reference to death and afterlife”

“An explosion, a life force, a connection between worlds”

“Vaudevillian funeral precession tumbling over itself”

“Cindy Sherman”

“I felt there was a real intention in your work to evoke and conduct energy/or life force, directed through portals and conducting devices - animal, human, object.”

“A sense of moving into darkness through ritual, through a return, a ‘backwards’.”

“I love Ma Kelly as frightening crone and matriarch. Loved the sound - so deranged and creaky, scrapeyside-show. “

Who is sneaking a peep of my impossible portrait in progress of three camouflaged comrades? You, a Rose or a Huxley?

You be the judge, you decide.
