Mum and dad, both 79 years old, are doing the City to Surf this year. Both for the same reason and different reasons alike.
Dad. Early 2019 was given 5-6 months to live with stage 4 lung cancer from a melanoma that had metastasized from his back to his lungs, spread to his bones, liver, pancreas and spleen. He was offered a relatively new treatment called Immunotherapy. By November 2019, he was considered almost cancer free. Within 11 months, he was 100% cancer free. With further treatment just to be sure for a while longer, he kept his hopes up and spirits high. He has regulars scans still which are still 100% cancer free. Here are the scans with his body riddled with the disgusting disease and the scans from about 6 months ago. That is his story (in short).
Mum. Mum has helped dad through this s**tty time. Consoling him because red wine tasted like s**t. Cooking him gluten free stuff (he’s celiac too) which she endured too just cause it’s a pain in the ass to cook 2 different meals. Then discovering that his favorite plain Smiths chips still taste good and they’re gluten free. Doing the City to Surf with him during covid when he was well enough for his 20th time. Always being his rock. People often forget about the person by their side who is there in the background suffering in silence. Until the last few years her sister, my Aunty Shirl, suffering from cancer started to get worse. Aunty Shirl lost her battle last month but bloody el did she fight the fight like a boot scooting trooper!!!
So this year. Mum and dad are doing the city to surf, trying to raise funds for each other and their family and friends any anyone else who is suffering in any way shape or form from this horrific disease.
Let’s try to raise more money to discover things like Immunotherapy so that family’s can have longer together.
Love you all 🫶🏻
