Hall Heritage Centre Annual Meeting

The annual meeting was held this week with Alastair Crombie (Honorary Curator) presenting the annual report on the many achievements of the Centre during 2025-26 and acknowledging the dedicated work of the volunteers.
Dr Ken Heffernan introduced the guest speaker Professor Mathew Trinca Talalin AM FAHA (former Director of the National Museum of Australia) who gave the annual address. This was an interesting talk about 'Local History and National Meaning: Australian History as a mosaic of our experience'. This subject is particularly relevant to the work of the Centre in researching and displaying the local history of Hall and district as an element within the overall history of Australia.

Henry Ffrench Gillman was the original resident of ‘Nil Desperandum’. His poems are recorded in the Lyall Gillespie collection at the Centre.

Centenary next year.

It was a special day in 1927 for both the Prime Minister Stanley Bruce and this group of youngsters - the opening of the Ainslie Public School.
For the children, it was their first day of formal education, for the PM, his first official duty in the top job.

Canberra Graveyard Tour!

On Saturday 29 August, I've scheduled a special one-off afternoon of Tombstone Tours at St Johns Graveyard in Canberra.

These tours usually operate at dusk or after-dark but not everyone likes roaming graveyards after the sun set so this tour is for you!

2pm - 415pm, Saturday 29 August.
Cost: $59pp
Ages: 16 and over

CHARNWOOD WATER METER UPGRADE PROJECT

Representatives from Infrastructure Delivery, City and Environment Directorate, ACT Government approached the Hall Heritage Centre last year with a proposal to embellish the Charnwood water meter with heritage images about the local area.
Using the Centre's large collection of images a number were selected to create the 'wrap-around'. The project has now been finalised and the water meter looks fabulous.
When next in the area go and have a look. It is located at the Charnwood Playing Fields off Lhotsky Street Charnwood.
