CQ Diggings needs your local knowledge.
We’re improving the way we model likely gold and gem areas across Queensland, and one of the best sources of information is the people who have actually spent time out there swinging a detector, panning creeks, digging wash or simply exploring the country.
If you know of an area where you’ve:
• found gold, gemstones or interesting mineralisation
• seen old workings, shafts, mullock heaps or diggings
• heard reliable local stories about old finds
• found colours in a creek or gully
• picked up specimens that looked worth investigating
• detected targets in an area that seemed geologically interesting
• noticed quartz, ironstone, old wash, exposed bedrock or other promising ground
we’d like to hear about it.
It does NOT have to be a famous goldfield or known gem area.
In fact, information from places that are barely documented, forgotten or completely unexpected can be especially useful.
We’re using historical records, geology, drainage, terrain, known occurrences and field information to improve our modelling of areas that may deserve a closer look.
Real-world observations help us test whether those models are actually pointing in the right direction.
You don’t need to give away your secret patch either. A general area, creek, range, district or description can still be useful.
Gold, sapphires, zircons, topaz, garnets, agates, thunder eggs, crystals or anything else you reckon is worth investigating, send it through.
Known area or unknown area, successful trip or just something that made you think “there might be something here”, it all helps.
The aim is simple: build a better picture of Queensland and hopefully identify some new places worth researching for panning, detecting and fossicking.

And yes, “old bloke at the pub reckons there was gold up there” still counts. We’ll just put that one in the evidence pile marked needs a little more work. 😄
