On behalf of the Falls Creek Museum team we hope you have the chance to spend some time with family and friends this Easter.

There is a lot going on in Falls Creek this weekend and so we thought we would add something else to do so we are going to open the museuml. The museum will be open between 11am and 4pm. If the flags are out then Ken is in the house.

Come on down and say hello.
👋

Congratulations Liana.

So we are sitting here watching the mens aerials and we remembered our very own jump at Falls Creek.

The construction of the Ross Milne Memorial Ski Jump was first discussed and built between 1964 and 1966. It was located at the top of Gully, Site 99, heading down the gully and ending with a run out onto Falls Creek Road. The Jump was constructed by the Nordic Committee of the Victorian Ski Association.

Problems plagued the construction of the Jump and continued until 1974 when it was deemed unsafe. Problems such as construction methods and materials, snow loading and soil foundations and footings were some of the issues which the VSA Nordic Committee faced.

The cost of reconstruction was prohibitive and an order was given that the Ski Jump was not to be used during the 1974 ski season. The Jump was dismantled not long after.

Does anyone have anything to add to this? We would love too hear any stories, especially from anyone who knew someone that jumped off it. Rumour has it there was only a couple of people who braved the ski jump.

Good luck to Phil Bellingham, Mt Beauty/Falls Creek local who will be participating in his 4th Olympic Games in the new event of Ski Mountaineering. Phil has represented Australia in skiathlon, freestyle sprint, 15km classic, team sprint, 50km freestyle and sprint and the mixed relay. We are exhausted just typing that. Now, its ski mountaineering(SkiMo), a combination of backcountry skiing, endurance racing and mountaineering. Holy smoke Phil. We will be watching on the 19th of Feb.

Courtesy of a post by our friend at I Dream of Snow , it was brought to our attention that yesterday, Saturday the 14th of Feb was international Snowmobile Ride Day. The Falls Creek Museum has two wonderful snowmobiles in our collection. One is on display in the museum, owned by Julian Newton Brown and permanently donated to us upon his passing. The Yamaha 1979 Model, 440cc capable of up to 80mph was one of the machines that was tested in Falls Creek over 4 winters in the 70's by the Yamaha Company. Yamaha went on to win the worlds fastest event in Eagle River in the 70's. (photo attached)

The second machine that we have in storage is the snowmobile from the Jackie Chan movie First Strike where our very own Steve Lee did stunt work for the film produced at Falls Creek, in the role of lead stunt skier and snowmobiler. Maybe we need to bring that out for an outdoor movie night this winter.

Falls Creek Museum is open during the winter season and major events during the green season. Send us a message if you have a gorup that would like to come in and look around. Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any items, photographs or stories to donate.

Next in our series of highlighting Olympic endeavours. All of the amazing athletes could not have had such success without support crew. There are family and friends and supporters but there are also other officials that make a difference. The Falls Creek Museum collection has 3 great outfits donated by such officials. The controversial Prue Acton designed outfit from the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Games worn by team doctor Dr Claude Farrar who was also a founding member of the Edelweiss Ski club. George Shirling graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. The last outfit we have is the Opening Ceremony uniform from the 2002 Salt Lake City games donated by Scott Sanderson who was Team Australia's Alpine Coach, Mens Speed/Combined. Scott also went to the Beijing Olympics as Team Australia Alpine Coach, Ladies Speed/Combined. We dont have a photo of the SL suit but we do have a small reminder, courtesy of Scott, from his time in Beijing (remember the masks). We also like to acknowledge Finn Marsland, Snow Australia's current XC Program Director and Head Coach of the National Team who not only had had a long history with Cross Country but has also taken on the role of organising the new event SkiMo. (Spoiler Alert - Future Post)

We know there are other locals who have been officials at Olympics, we would love to hear your stories or better still, post some photos.

So we have highlighted our moguls specialists, we have highlighted our Cross Country legends, now it is the folks that strap a couple of pieces of wood to their feet, point down a hill and just go for it at the Olympics. Ross Milne ( Innsbruck 1964) and his brother Malcolm (Grenoble 1968, Sapporo 1972), Jenny Altermatt (Lake Placid 1960), Joanne McDougall (Henke), Innsbruck 1976 and three time Olympian Steve Lee (Sarajevo 1984, Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992) have all been a part of Australian Olympic teams. Attached in the photos is the famous suit made for Steve Lee by Spyder in the green and gold colours. Steve always joked with us that we needed a much bigger mannequin to really fill out his suit like he did. â›·â›·â›·
We have had a lot of other amazing downhill skiers represent at World Cups, junior championships and development programs. We salute all the athletes for their dedication, perserverence and hard work.

Cross Country, XCountry, XC - how do you say it? Cross-country ski competition encompasses a variety of formats for races over courses of varying lengths but tonight its the sprinters turn to shine at the MilanoCortino Olympic Games. Falls Creek has helped produce amazing XC athletes representing Australia in World Cups and Olympics over the years. Paul Murray, Anthony Evans, Esther Bottomley, Phil Billingham, Chris Heberle, Paul Gray and our first representative Richard Walpole have made 16 appearances at Olympic games since 1960 but many other athletes have represented in junior and develoment squads over the years.

With the moguls starting tomorrow its a great opportunity to reflect on those from Falls Creek that have gone on to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in freestyle skiing. 4 time Olympian Britteny Cox 2010 to 2022, Lillehammer Olympian Paul Costa, and 4 time Olympian from 1992 to 2002 Adrian Costa, have proudly worn the green and gold. We still get the pleasure of seeing Britt on our tv's during the MilanoCortina 2026 games in her new role as commentator. Good luck to all our Australian athletes these games. PS. If you are visiting Falls Creek this winter come on in to the museum and check out our Olympic corner with uniforms, skis and memorabilia from all of our Falls Creek Olympians.

According to AI generated information, the hottest day on reecord at Falls Creek was recorded on January 16, 2014 - 29.7 degrees. It looks like we have the same today. How hot is it up there Falls Creek locals?

History is not just old 'stuff'. Items such as these ones tell us so much about the mountains history. Social, physical and economical history can be determined from these paper items. They tell us what was in fashion, what equipment was being used, economic data through the prices of resort entry, ski tickets and ski lessons. From a marketing perspective we can see the evolution of the Falls Creek logos and in some cases we even recognise the people in the brochures which brings back valuable memories. Thank you to everyone that donates to the Falls Creek Museum. Each item is being digitised, given an identity number, placed on our Victorian Collections page and then stored using archival survival sleeves to ensure its protection and preservation. Each dollar donated to the museum buys these sleeves, boxes for the dvd's, pays for digitisation and the many other jobs around preservation. Thank you for your support and thank you to our volunteers that make all this happen.
