His recent awards include a Highly Commended at the Woollam Outback Art Prize, Winton, Queensland, an International Award for Contemporary Art, Ferrara, Italy, Best Oil or Acrylic, Brisbane Senses Art Show, 2011, finalist 2007 and 2008 Tattersall's Art Prize, finalist Cromwell Art Prize in 2005 and Highly Commended at the Outback Spirit Ergon Energy Waltzing Matilda Art Show. ows to date and has a large list of group shows that have included touring exhibitions throughout Queensland. Pete has been an artist in residence at a number of schools and is currently 'Artist in Residence' with Clovely Estate Wines. ON THE ROAD SUNRISE - acrylic on canvas, 60 x 91 cm. Based on a road trip photograph taken from a moving car at sunrise, this painting was created to capture the feeling of the freshness of a new day’s light. After driving all night, the colours of the new day were almost overwhelming. I wanted to show the movement looking out that side window, the only objects in focus were the kangaroos. I used a ‘Georges Seurat’ style pointillistic painting method, setting colours beside each other to create the effect of even more colours. I can’t count how many transparent layers went into this work, but I got the look was wanted. The whole effect is almost like looking out a window, the painting has an inner light that commands your attention. This is a limited edition print of a pen and ink sketch of Craig's Royal Hotel, a legendary Australian gold-rush era grand hotel. Opened in 1853 and host to poets, princes and prime ministers over its 150 year history, the hotel is a true icon of the Victorian period. WHALES - Whales, acrylic on canvas, 76 x 102cm, signed front and back, sealed ready to hang. I couldn’t resist painting these playful creatures. Years ago I had the pleasure of witnessing the whales for myself and the feeling has stayed with me. Whales represent a lot of things, but to me it’s their grace and presence that I find exciting. Look closely and you’ll see that I have used patterning in the sky, the water and the island that has a feel of south seas native tattoos. I got lost in the creation of this piece, I worked hard to create something that was a little away from the classic whale paintings, I wanted something more subtle and considered. K’gari (previously known as Fraser Island) in the background provides a protected sanctuary for young and old.
