Meet Mr. and Mrs. Jones, the subjects of a fascinating caricature at the now Bushmans Gallery!

Some local residents might still remember Annie Jones, who was affectionately (and perhaps a bit cheekily) known as “Spitting Annie” due to her lively habit of spitting when she spoke. It is a classic piece of Blackall history.

The investigation into the artist points to the prominent political cartoonist John Frith, who was associated with the Sydney Morning Herald around 1950. A unique trademark of Frith’s work—including this caricature—is the inclusion of a “scraggly bird.” He started adding these little characters, like the crow seen here, as a clever response to critics who complained about too much negative space in his drawings.

If John Frith is indeed the artist, as we strongly believe, this piece is a significant addition to the Gallery, marking Mr Frith as the first and very highly esteemed artist to showcase his work here. Beyond his cartoons, Frith was also a talented sculptor known for his political figures, and his legacy is preserved at the Old Parliament House in Canberra.

When you walk through our doors, you are greeted by a local. 👋🏻

We are 100% volunteer run, and there is always a story to share about the art on the walls or the history of the building. There is a high chance you will meet one of the artists who has work displayed in the gallery.
