Robert Preece: Exploring Acrylic
Gallery Shop
1—30 June 2026

Robert Preece presents his first ever exhibition throughout June at the Pop-Up Benalla Art Gallery, sharing a body of work that marks a new chapter in his creative life.

For many years, Preece’s primary passion throughout retirement has been working with wood, a hands-on practice that has shaped his patience, craftsmanship and eye for detail. In January 2024, at the age of 83, he experienced what he describes as “a lightbulb flash of inspiration” and felt compelled to try painting for the first time.

“My main thought was to try landscapes,” he explains. Using photographs taken by himself, family and friends, Preece translates familiar scenes into carefully observed acrylic paintings. His long-held admiration for the Old Masters has also quietly informed his approach. “My interest in the Old Master artists… was an influencing factor in me pursuing painting”.

This exhibition is the first public display of what has quickly become a prolific and deeply rewarding creative pursuit. Through these works, Preece invites viewers to share in landscapes shaped by memory, observation and his spark of curiosity that proves it is never too late to begin again.

All works in the Gallery Shop are available for purchase from Pop-Up Benalla Art Gallery, or by contacting the Gallery on: T 03 5760 2619 or [email protected].

Lygin Ang: Window Seat

1 June – 31 August 2026
Gallery Shop Exhibition

Lygin Ang creates detailed landscapes and delicate images of animals using printmaking, drawing and painting processes. Within his drawings and paintings, Lygin’s subjects often have defined black outlines filled with bright colours on soft textured backgrounds. His prints are often monochromatic, and he studies other artists’ practices, to support his development of printmaking. He has an excellent understanding of drypoint and linocut processes, which he uses to explore the possibilities of line and texture.

Ang has worked at Arts Project Australia since 2013 and has exhibited in the group exhibitions in Melbourne. His work is featured in private collections.

What could be more exciting than a suitcase filled with art you can touch?

The Benalla Art Gallery is excited to offer a free art program for students, teachers and community groups thanks to the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Art Cases Touring Program. These art-filled cases are designed to travel to schools, libraries, community centres, galleries and aged care homes, where the works are discovered and handled by adults and children of all ages for both exhibition, art making and storytelling.

Following a successful delivery of the Body (Red) and Form and Function (Orange) cases from February – May this year which reached 600+ participants, we are excited to welcome two new cases available for viewing until July 2026. The Past, Present and Future (Yellow) case brings together works that reflect on or are invested with the passing of time and the Earth (Blue) case brings together artists who reflect on the importance of the natural world and our place within it.

Touch, learn, and explore the concepts and themes of this interesting art case, with school-based, cross curricular investigations available via learning resources and activities developed by the National Gallery.

For more information, visit our website https://benallaartgallery.com.au/national-gallery-touring-art-cases/

Jane Coy: Mysteries of the Great Ocean Road
Gallery Shop
1—31 May 2026

Jane Coy presents a series of prints based on her watercolour paintings inspired by the dramatic landscapes and wildlife of the Great Ocean Road, accompanied by a selection of associated wildlife dioramas that reflect the region’s unique natural environment.

Born and educated in New Zealand, Jane moved to Australia in 1965. Although having no formal training, she maintained a lifelong interest in painting and sketching, continually nurturing a creative practice driven by observation and curiosity.

During the 1990s, Jane spent two years on the southern coast under the expert guidance of the late wildlife artist and whale-watcher Robert Ulmann. This period provided invaluable experience in watercolour, a medium that has remained her greatest passion, and deepened her connection marine life and all aspects of nature.

Though painting opportunities have been constantly disrupted, Jane’s creative drive has remained steady. Working with wire and building with wood by hand continues to shape her practice and reflects her ongoing commitment to art in general.

All works in the Gallery Shop are available for purchase from Benalla Art Gallery Pop-Up, or by contacting the Gallery on: T 03 5760 2619 or [email protected].
